Just west of the Grampians National Park lies a little town of Ararat. There are some little known 4wd tracks in the area around a lookout known as One Tree Hill. The area is difficult to find on google but if you search for "One Tree Hill Track Ararat" you will find it.
There are 2 ways to explore the area. You can start by heading up the One Tree Hill Road (as we did) to the One Tree Hill Lookout. This is fairly well signed off the highway. From the top of the lookout you can explore a number of 4wd tracks around the Ararat Hills Park. Tracks lead up and down the hills and you will encounter mud/sharp rocks and gravel.
The second entry to the tracks is available as you head into the bush off the highway approximately 20m past Madex and Dutton Way Tracks. You'll come to a dam about 50m into the track and take the entrance to the left.
The tracks in the area are quite tight and flat at the start then they open up to get very steep. Most of the tracks are loops that lead to the top of One Tree Hill and the lookout.
